Interrogative Verbs in Takic

چکیده
A Google Scholar search for "interrogative verbs" brings up mostly references to verbs of asking, verbs with interrogative affixes, or verbs used in questions. A number of languages, however, have special verbs that include a semantic wh element in addition to their more typical question words. Verbs like this have not been extensively described, although Hagège (2003, 2008) suggests they are more common than most linguists realize: "Interrogative verbs," he writes, "can teach us many interesting things about certain relatively hidden, or unheeded, properties of language" (2008: 38). Hagège's broad survey turned up 28 languages with verbs of this type, including four from different North American indigenous language families. In this paper I'll consider interrogative verbs in four languages from the Takic subfamily of Uto-Aztecan (all from Southern California), which is unrelated to the languages surveyed by Hagège. I begin by explaining (in section 1) what interrogative verbs are (and are not), using non-Takic examples, and then I'll describe the interrogative verbs in the Cupan and Gabrielino/Tongva/Fernandeño branches of Takic (in section 2). In section 3 I consider briefly some of the typological and theoretical implications of such verbs .

Czech Verbs of Communication with respect to the Types of Dependent Content Clauses
e present paper describes a classification of Czech verbs of communication based on the information on the type of dependent content clauses which these verbs require to be complemented by. We distinguish assertive, interrogative and directive verbs of communication. Furthermore, we propose a method how to treat those verbs of communication which behave ‘neutrally’ with respect to the type of ...
متن کاملQuestion-Embedding and Factivity
Attitude verbs fall in different categories depending on the kind of complements which they can embed. In English, a verb like know takes both declarative and interrogative complements. By contrast, believe takes only declarative complements and wonder takes only interrogative complements. The present paper examines the hypothesis, originally put forward by Hintikka 1975, that the only verbs th...

متن کاملA Unification-based Approach to Mandarin Questions
This paper providers unification-based GPSG and LFG analyses of Mandarin questions. First, we briefly introduce four kinds of Mandarin question, namely, WH-questions, A-not-A questions, disjunctive questions, and particle questions. Their different interrogative messages are adequately encoded with different feature-value pairs. Then, the compatibility of this interrogative information in a sim...
متن کاملA computational model of S-selection
Abstract We develop a probabilistic model of S(emantic)-selection that encodes both the notion of systematic mappings from semantic type signature to syntactic distribution—i.e., projection rules—and the notion of selectional noise—e.g., C(ategory)-selection, L(exical)-selection, and/or other independent syntactic processes. We train this model on data from a large-scale judgment study assessin...
